Aids Pandemic

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic is a widespread disease caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Since AIDS was first recognized in 1981, it has led to the deaths of more than 25 million people, making it one of the most destructive diseases in recorded history. Despite recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, in 2007 the AIDS pandemic killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children. As of 2009, it is estimated that there are 33.3 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, with 2.6 million new HIV infections per year and 1.8 million annual deaths due to AIDS. This has been attributed to lack of access to antiretroviral treatment in huge areas such as the continent of Africa, where (according to French researcher Olivier Schwartz), less than 10 percent of infected are reported to have access to it. According to some researchers and institutions the situation is more serious than the UNAIDS figures suggest, the epidemic is accelerating and a second wave is developing. From Wikipedia under the

Is it pandemic or limited? Q. What is the scale of Aids infections in Russia? Is it pandemic or limited? Asked by Distinguished Gentleman - Sat Feb 16 14:29:55 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. There were approx. 940,000 people with HIV in russia in 2005. Im not sure about the current numbers. Its not pandemic it affecting mainly intravenous drug addicts and heterosexuals (homosexulas account for about 1% of infected individuals). It has a very high rate of new infections though so the numbers are probably much higher now. Q. Do you think the Global AIDS Pandemic is very underreported here in the United States? Asked by Rafa! - Thu Feb 21 16:04:54 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. It may surface every now-and-again in the paper or on the evening news, but for the most part it is forgotten about. Because it is primarily in impoverished areas, we tend to feel a certain disconnect about it. Answered by txofficer2005 - Thu Feb 21 16:11:25 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "aids pandemic" |

In Uganda successful fight against HIV/AIDS is well recognised. By 1991 Uganda's HIV/AIDS prevalence stood at about 30% in some parts of the country. This had reduced to about 5% by 2001. This success largely depended on the social and interpersonal networks referred to as social capital. The book documents the role of NGOs in mobilising social capital at different levels and its effect on HIV/AIDS challenges in Uganda. A major finding in the book is that the ways individuals and groups are connected and interact with each other are important mechanisms for alleviating HIV/AIDS. From Uganda's story there are three lessons learned; 1. Earlier contextual explanations such as witchcraft as the cause of the disease which had dominated community approaches to HIV/AIDS are demystified;2. Fighting HIV/AIDS goes beyond the medical profession to include the social approaches;3. Emerging issues such as religious fundamentalism have negative impact on Uganda's success story and may explain new trends in HIV/AIDS prevalence From Google Product Search: "aids pandemic" |
